Helloween’s United Alive project represents one of the most significant milestones in the history of power metal. It captures the monumental “Pumpkins United” world tour, which saw the return of legendary former members to the band’s lineup. This guide provides a clear overview of the tour, the live album, and why this era remains a favorite for fans worldwide.
The Significance of the Pumpkins United Reunion
The United Alive era began with the announcement of the Pumpkins United reunion. For decades, fans of the German power metal pioneers dreamed of seeing iconic vocalist Michael Kiske and founding guitarist Kai Hansen return to the group. In 2016, that dream became a reality when they joined the existing lineup of Andi Deris, Michael Weikath, Sascha Gerstner, Markus Grosskopf, and Dani Löble.
This seven-piece supergroup combined the different eras of the band into a single, cohesive unit. The reunion was not just a short-lived nostalgia trip but a full-scale creative rebirth. It allowed the band to perform songs that had not been heard live with their original vocalists in over thirty years.
Overview of the United Alive World Tour
The United Alive world tour was an extensive global undertaking that lasted from 2017 to 2018. The band performed 69 shows across 32 different countries, reaching audiences in Europe, Asia, and the Americas. The scale of the production was massive, featuring high-definition LED screens and synchronized visuals that enhanced the storytelling of the music.
Tour Statistics and Reach
- Duration: Over 14 months of consistent touring.
- Attendance: More than one million fans attended the shows globally.
- Key Performances: Headlining slots at major festivals like Wacken Open Air and Rock in Rio.
The tour was characterized by its length and energy. Despite the demanding schedule, the band maintained a high level of performance, often playing sets that lasted nearly three hours. This stamina showcased the chemistry between the seven members and their dedication to the fanbase.
The United Alive Live Releases
To document this historic tour, the band released a comprehensive set of live recordings in 2019. These releases were titled “United Alive” for the video formats and “United Alive in Madrid” for the audio formats. They serve as a definitive record of the Pumpkins United lineup in its prime.
Video Formats (DVD and Blu-ray)
The video release is a visual feast for metal fans. It features three main performances recorded at different locations to give a full picture of the tour’s atmosphere. The primary footage comes from the show in Madrid, Spain, supplemented by recordings from the Wacken Open Air festival in Germany and a massive show in São Paulo, Brazil.
The production uses state-of-the-art camera work to capture both the intricate musicianship and the emotional reactions of the crowd. It also includes bonus features such as behind-the-scenes interviews and a look at the preparation required for such a large tour.
Audio Format (United Alive in Madrid)
The live album focuses primarily on the Madrid performance. This location was chosen for its incredible crowd energy, which is clearly audible throughout the recording. The audio was meticulously mixed to ensure that the three-guitar attack and the dual-vocal harmonies of Kiske and Deris were perfectly balanced.
The Setlist: A Journey Through Metal History
The setlist for the United Alive tour was carefully curated to honor every era of the band’s history. By having both Michael Kiske and Andi Deris on stage, the band could perform hits from the “Keeper of the Seven Keys” albums alongside modern classics from the Deris era. The two singers often shared the stage, creating unique harmonies on songs like “Halloween” and “How Many Tears.”
Core Highlights of the Performance
- The Medleys: Kai Hansen performed a medley of early speed metal classics from the “Walls of Jericho” era.
- Vocal Duets: “Eagle Fly Free” and “Keeper of the Seven Keys” featured stunning vocal exchanges between Kiske and Deris.
- Emotional Tributes: The band included a drum battle segment that paid tribute to the late Ingo Schwichtenberg, the band’s original drummer.
The inclusion of these varied elements made the show feel like a celebration of the band’s entire legacy. It provided a sense of closure for long-time fans while introducing newer listeners to the depth of the band’s discography.
Production Quality and Technical Details
One of the reasons the United Alive release is so highly regarded is its technical excellence. The audio was produced with a focus on clarity, ensuring that the listener can hear every note of the complex guitar solos. The video was captured in high definition, providing a crisp look at the stage design and the band’s interactions.
The release was made available in several versions to cater to different types of collectors. These included standard CD and Blu-ray sets, as well as limited edition earbooks and multi-disc vinyl sets. The artwork for the release continued the band’s tradition of using high-quality, thematic illustrations featuring their iconic pumpkin mascot.
