Daum News is one of the most prominent news aggregation services in South Korea. Operated by Kakao, it serves as a primary source of information for millions of users daily. Whether you are looking for the latest political updates, economic trends, or entertainment gossip, Daum News provides a centralized hub for high-quality journalism from various Korean media outlets.
Understanding how to navigate this platform is essential for anyone wanting to stay informed about South Korean current events. Because the interface is feature-rich, knowing where to find specific sections can save you time. This guide will walk you through the essential features of Daum News and how to tailor the experience to your interests.
How to Access Daum News
There are several ways to access Daum News depending on your device and preference. The most direct way is through the official portal website. By visiting news.daum.net, you can view the full desktop version of the service, which offers the most comprehensive layout for reading long-form articles.
For mobile users, the experience is optimized through the Daum app or the KakaoTalk app. Since Kakao owns Daum, they have integrated news directly into the KakaoTalk messenger. By tapping the “#” (Sharp) tab or the news icon within the app, you can browse headlines without ever leaving your chat interface.
- Web Browser: Visit news.daum.net on any PC or mobile browser.
- Daum App: Available on both iOS and Android for a dedicated browsing experience.
- KakaoTalk Integration: Access news snippets and trending topics directly within the messenger app.
Navigating the Main News Categories
Daum News organizes its content into several major categories to help users find what they need quickly. These categories are usually located at the top of the page in a navigation bar. Understanding these labels is the first step to mastering the platform.
The Politics (정치) section covers government activities, elections, and policy changes. If you are interested in the stock market or corporate news, the Economy (경제) section provides real-time updates and financial analysis. For general news about daily life, crime, and education, the Society (사회) section is the place to look.
Other popular sections include:
- World (국제): News from outside of South Korea, covering global events.
- IT/Tech (IT): Updates on the latest gadgets, software, and the semiconductor industry.
- Culture (문화): Information on books, health, and lifestyle trends.
- Entertainment (연예): Updates on K-pop, movies, and celebrity news.
- Sports (스포츠): Scores and news regarding baseball, soccer, and other major sports.
Using the Real-Time News Rankings
One of the most popular features of Daum News is its ranking system. This allows users to see what the rest of the country is reading at any given moment. The “Ranking” tab displays articles that are currently receiving the most clicks, comments, or social media shares.
While this is a great way to spot breaking news, it is important to remember that these rankings change rapidly. If you see a major headline, it is often helpful to click through to see if there are follow-up reports. Daum often groups related articles together, allowing you to see different perspectives on the same trending topic.
The “Most Viewed” List
This list shows the top 10 or 20 articles that have the highest traffic over a specific period. It is usually divided by category, so you can see the most viewed political news versus the most viewed entertainment news separately.
The “Commented” List
This section highlights articles that are generating the most discussion. While the comment sections on certain news categories (like Entertainment and Sports) have been restricted or modified to prevent cyberbullying, other sections still allow for robust public discourse.
Customizing Your News Feed
If you have a Kakao account, you can personalize your news experience. By logging in, you can “follow” specific news outlets or topics that interest you. This ensures that when you open the app, the news you care about most appears at the top of your feed.
The MY News feature is particularly useful for busy professionals. You can save articles to read later or set up notifications for specific keywords. For example, if you are tracking a specific company for investment purposes, you can set an alert to be notified whenever that company is mentioned in a headline.
To customize your feed, look for the “Settings” or “Edit” icon near the category bar. From there, you can drag and drop categories to reorder them or hide sections that you rarely visit. This makes the interface much cleaner and more efficient for daily use.
Searching for Specific Information
The search bar at the top of Daum News is a powerful tool. Unlike a general web search, searching within the news portal filters results to only include verified journalistic content. You can search by keyword, journalist name, or the name of the news agency.
When you perform a search, you can further refine your results using filters. You can sort by “Accuracy” (relevance to your keyword) or “Recency” (the most recent articles first). You can also set a specific date range if you are looking for information about a past event.
Pro Tip: If you are looking for official statements, try searching for the specific government department or corporate entity along with the keyword “official statement” (공식입장) to find primary source reporting.
Multimedia Content: Photos and Videos
Daum News is not just about text. The platform has a dedicated Photo News section where you can view high-resolution images of major events. This is often the fastest way to get a sense of what is happening at a protest, a sporting event, or a red-carpet gala.
Additionally, the Video News section aggregates clips from major broadcasters like KBS, MBC, SBS, and YTN. If you prefer watching the news rather than reading it, this section provides short, digestible video summaries of the day’s top stories. Many of these videos include subtitles, making them accessible even in quiet environments.
Staying Safe and Fact-Checking
In the digital age, misinformation can spread quickly. Daum News takes several steps to ensure the reliability of the information on its platform. They partner with established media organizations and often feature fact-checking segments where common rumors are debunked.
As a reader, it is helpful to check which news agency published the article. You can see the logo or the name of the agency next to the headline. Familiarizing yourself with the reputations of different outlets can help you weigh the information you are consuming. If a story seems too sensational, look for the same story from multiple sources within the Daum ecosystem to verify the details.
Conclusion
Daum News is a versatile and comprehensive tool for anyone looking to stay connected with South Korean society. By learning how to navigate its categories, utilize the ranking systems, and customize your personal feed, you can transform the platform into a tailored information stream that fits your lifestyle. Whether you are using the desktop site for deep research or the KakaoTalk integration for quick updates, Daum News offers the clarity and speed required in today’s fast-paced world.
